Taqueria Corona

Have you been to Taqueria Corona? If you are anything like me, you have tried to go a bunch of times and they are always closed. During the regular season this year, they once posted a sign in the window that said "Closed for Saints game." At least their heart's in the right place. But after a year of trying to eat there once every 3 months, I finally sneaked in with Kerry. They had a pretty extensive menu of tacos, combination plates, flautas, enchiladas, and so on. Though everything seems well-priced individually, our bill did end up being a little pricier than expected. I think it might have had something to do with the two margaritas.

So Kerry had three tacos. I'm pretty sure they were (in order) rib eye, fish, and shrimp. The best thing about the tacos are the tortillas they come in. I'm one of those people that orders corn tortillas at places even though I like flour better. I like people to think I'm authentic. Well, Taqueria Corona doesn't give you the option. They hit you with some flour tortillas that are pillowy and delicious so I don't even feel guilty about them.

I had one of the combination plates. It had a name but I forget what it was because this was literally weeks ago. Let's see though. Looks like I had a flauta, a burrito and a fish taco. It was all pretty good. I do remember that the fish taco was especially good, I think because i substituted the tartar sauce out for some pico de gallo. Kerry had her fish taco with the tartar sauce, and didn't love it. But the fish was lightly battered and crisp and fresh.

Alright, I think that's it. Have a good Super Bowl weekend. Let's be honest, everyone: Super Bowl weekend probably started on Tuesday. Go Saints.

Grand Isle

I had been looking forward to trying Grand Isle for quite some time.  I'm not exactly sure what had me so excited about it.  I do know that I wouldn't be excited to try it again.

We went last night to celebrate the start of our last semester as Tulane MBA students.  We don't venture down to toward the Convention Center very often so it seemed like a novel choice to us, but what started out as a novel trip to a new restaurant turned into a pretty big disappointment on all fronts.

I don't think we are very hard to please.  I'm pretty forgiving of sub-par service and I can get by on mediocre food but both at the same time is hard to get past.  Especially on a night where we were one of maybe 6 tables.  The host and the server were both pretty abrupt and unfriendly.  I had to ask for the specials one by one.  Even when standing at the table the server was more interested in watching the Villanova Louisville game.  The most talkative person of the night was the food runner.

And like I said, the food didn't make up for it.

We started with the onion rings which the menu claimed were the best in town.  I don't know if that's true or not but unfortunately they were the best thing we had that night.

Kerry had the fish with chili butter.  It came with some potatoes and zucchini.  Thankfully it was a little better than it looks here but still nothing special.

I had the Hand Cut Pork Plate.  I wasn't sure that meant so I asked the waiter and he said it was a carved pork tenderloin.  That sounded okay to me.  This was definitely some sort of chop though.  It came with collards and grits.  I don't know one thing about collards so I won't comment on those.  The grits weren't bad though.  Even though the pork wasn't what I was expecting I still think it would have been better if the sauce tasted like something/anything at all.

So not a great meal.  Maybe not the worst meal covered on this blog but definitely the one that has let me down the most.

It's not that I'm mad at you Grand Isle... just very very disappointed.

**Oh and I just realized why I thought it was going to be good.  It was that great poboy at Poboy Fest.  Last time I base my expectations on 3 inches of poboy.

The Rum House

So again, this is from a while back. We stopped by the Rum House down on Magazine a few days after they opened.

The Rum House seems like a pretty good idea. I always tend to think of Caribbean themed anything as a little hokey but I'm not really above hokey things - so why not you know? The food was pretty good. We both got a trio of tacos and them came out looking like this on a little three taco stand.

Like I said It was a while back but it looks like I went with a fish taco, their rib taco and the calypso beef taco (Island marinated steak with guacamole and a drizzle of cilantro lime sour cream). The fish taco was pretty good but I'm not really that into fish tacos. The rib taco was pretty great though. Like really great. Besides the fact that I feel like an idiot eating something called calypso beef, that one was pretty good too.

All and all they where some pretty high quality tacos. Only real complaint about Rum House? The tacos are pretty tiny, almost like they are made for some sort of superbly palated child. It would have cost me about $20 to leave the place full. Pretty hefty when you consider the $2.50 price tag on the tacos.

It was good though and worth trying out. Especially if you're some sort of dwarf or pixie.

Sun Ray Grill

I've said a bunch of times that more posts are coming. I've made a liar of myself and I understand that. I'm not going to say it again. But seriously though, there are going to be more posts.

Lets get it back going with Sun Ray Grill on Annunciation in the Warehouse District.

Oh man. Talk about good spinach and artichoke dip. Never mind don't talk about it just read about it here. I can't explain why its was so good, it could have been that i hadn't eaten in 9 hours, but i think there was a little something special to it. If nothing else they offered chips or pita. We went with the chips cause we like a little crunch in our lives. I can't think of anything else to say about it. Here is a blurry picture of it though.

Kerry went with the Gulf Fish Tacos of course (if you follow us on twitter you already knew that, if you don't follow us on twitter then you might as well surrender yourself to the revolution). I had a bite because I always have a bite and they were real good. I think they had a smokey taste to them. I wonder why. Well they were good and the cabbage was fresh and the fish was aquatic. I didn't try the beans but the saffron rice was actually really really good too.

I has the Steak and Bleu Quesadilla. It was pretty good too. I'm going to complain about a few things about it now but it really was good so if you ever want to get it you should should. BUT. It came in a spinach tortilla... I don't get why places do that. I always would prefer a normal tortilla i don't need flavor in my tortilla i just need pillowy freshness. I asked for a normal tortilla and they said they didn't even have them. You serve Mexican food. The other thing is I couldn't really taste the bleu cheese cause it was mixed in with monetary jack. I really wanted to taste it though.

Alright. That's it. I hope you got your fix. There is going to be more. I promise this time. Oh seriously though follow us on twitter y'all.

Wednesday at the Square

So we hit up Wednesday at the Square on... well Wednesday. It was pretty good there. We ran into a bunch of people we know and got a free beer from one of our friends manning the beer table.

Oh and we ate some food! Kerry had some fish tacos. I think it was a set of 3 for $6. I'm not sure where they were from actually (but I was just informed they were from Zoe at the W) but here is what they looked like in 2d.

I had some Ginger Boiled Shrimp in Sweet Soy Sauce from Saltwater Grill and a Smoked Sausage from Pull My Pork (website? No.). Both were kind unimpressive. As you can see below the shrimp were on some shredded lettuce for some reason. The sausage had cold slaw on it which I liked the idea of but it was too spicy and I'm not normally a wimp when it comes to spice.

In general the food seemed over priced. When i mentioned this to a friend there I was reminded its all for charity. So I guess that makes it ok. Regardless I'm pretty sure we'll be back next week for Trombone Shorty.

Freret Street Market

What better place to spend a birthday than Freret Street Market? We went on Saturday. Normally it happens the first Sat of each month at the corner or Freret and Napoleon but they switched it up this month.

As big a fan as I am of the Crecent City Market the Freret Market is the supeior market when it comes to food. Just look below at the fish tacos we picked up.

Not a terrible deal at $3.50 each. I'm not sure what kind of fish it was but there was a lot of it and they were tasty. And then for dessert an all natural watermelon lemonade sno-ball. This I was a little disappointed with... Maybe I prefer my sno-balls Plum Street style and not so "all natural.". Either way I was looking for more sugar, more lemon and less watermelon seed pieces.

And we also picked up some corn that we had for dinner with... You guessed it - bacon wrapped potatoes. The corn was sweet and good just the right amount of all natural.
