Grand Isle

I had been looking forward to trying Grand Isle for quite some time.  I'm not exactly sure what had me so excited about it.  I do know that I wouldn't be excited to try it again.

We went last night to celebrate the start of our last semester as Tulane MBA students.  We don't venture down to toward the Convention Center very often so it seemed like a novel choice to us, but what started out as a novel trip to a new restaurant turned into a pretty big disappointment on all fronts.

I don't think we are very hard to please.  I'm pretty forgiving of sub-par service and I can get by on mediocre food but both at the same time is hard to get past.  Especially on a night where we were one of maybe 6 tables.  The host and the server were both pretty abrupt and unfriendly.  I had to ask for the specials one by one.  Even when standing at the table the server was more interested in watching the Villanova Louisville game.  The most talkative person of the night was the food runner.

And like I said, the food didn't make up for it.

We started with the onion rings which the menu claimed were the best in town.  I don't know if that's true or not but unfortunately they were the best thing we had that night.

Kerry had the fish with chili butter.  It came with some potatoes and zucchini.  Thankfully it was a little better than it looks here but still nothing special.

I had the Hand Cut Pork Plate.  I wasn't sure that meant so I asked the waiter and he said it was a carved pork tenderloin.  That sounded okay to me.  This was definitely some sort of chop though.  It came with collards and grits.  I don't know one thing about collards so I won't comment on those.  The grits weren't bad though.  Even though the pork wasn't what I was expecting I still think it would have been better if the sauce tasted like something/anything at all.

So not a great meal.  Maybe not the worst meal covered on this blog but definitely the one that has let me down the most.

It's not that I'm mad at you Grand Isle... just very very disappointed.

**Oh and I just realized why I thought it was going to be good.  It was that great poboy at Poboy Fest.  Last time I base my expectations on 3 inches of poboy.

I've never been, but I honestly have never heard one good report about the place. Everyone says the same thing...very mediocre.
